Serbia’s flag hoisted in the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts in Reading


The ceremony held on Friday, 26 June 2015 in Reading, UK symbolically heralded Serbia’s full-fledged membership in the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), which came into effect on 1 January 2015.

The flag was raised by Dr Jugoslav Nikolic, Director of the Republic Hydrometeorological  Institute (RHMZ) and a representative of the Republic of Serbia in the ECMWF, in the presence of Ambassador dr Ognjen Pribicevic in London, Professor Alan Thorpe, General Director of ECMWF, dr Gerhard Adrian, Director of the German Meteorological Service and ECMWF Council President and other twenty members of the Council, representatives of national meteorological services of major European developed countries.

ECMWF is the most important weather forecast association at the global level. The guests were shown of the most powerful super-computers in the world – CRAY Multi-peta FLOPS. What this computer can do in one second would require the entire British population to work for two years to achieve the same results.
