The Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in London hosted a gathering on the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, on Friday, 26 January 2018.

Charge d’Affaires a.i. at the Embassy Nataša Marić thanked those present, who, like previous years, gathered on this occasion, and added that the Republic of Serbia has been observing the International Holocaust Day since 2006 by organizing numerous commemorative, educational and scientific events.

The theme of this year’s commemoration was the Novi Sad Raid in 1942, and the lecture was delivered by the representative of the Jewish municipality of Novi Sad, Sonja Fišteš, who spoke about the crimes committed against the Serbian, Jewish and Roma people during the Second World War.

The organizer of the commemoration, Director of the Jasenovac and Holocaust Memorial Foundation D. Tomašević, remarked that the general public of Britain was not sufficiently familiar with all the crimes that happened in the Balkans, and that the Foundation’s task was not only to keep memory but also to educate, inform and raise awareness of the crimes that have been silenced for decades.

After the lecture, the guests had the opportunity to see an exhibition of photographs of the Novi Sad raid.

The event was attended by representatives of the diplomatic corps, the Serbian Orthodox Church, Princess Katarina de Silva and representatives of the Serbian Diaspora in London.
